The VLSI Symposium 2024, an international academic conference on large-scale integrated circuits, will be held in Hawaii, USA from June 16th to 20th, 2024. The VLSI Symposium Committee held a press conference for the April 2024 event, explaining the conference summary and submitted/accepted papers.

The VLSI Symposium is one of the international conferences that reports on cutting-edge research achievements related to LSI every year. It consists of the "VLSI Technology Symposium" on device technology and the "VLSI Circuit Symposium" on circuit design. It will be held alternately in Kyoto and Hawaii, and will be held in Hawaii in 2024. During the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus infection) pandemic, the event will be online or mixed, but will be held locally from the year before 2023. This seminar is also held locally, with a focus on cultural exchange and discussion based on the previously popular seminar. Paper presentations and keynote speeches are expected to be provided as needed after the event.

The theme of the 2024 VLSI Symposium is "Connecting the Digital and Physical Worlds with Efficiency and Intelligence". The theme is based on the increasing importance of semiconductors due to the rise of DX (digital transformation) and generative AI (artificial intelligence).

There will be four keynote speeches at that time, with themes of "Edge Artificial Intelligence," "Mobile Revolution," "Wireless Technology," and "IOWN. In addition, we will also hold joint focus conferences aimed at coordinating device technology and circuit design, group discussions on artificial intelligence, and short-term courses in various fields of devices and circuits. On the first day, the 16th, 5 seminars were arranged. On the last day of the 20th, Greg Yeric from the Chip Research and Development Department of the US Department of Commerce will give a luncheon speech titled "CHIPS Act and Its Impact on the Global Semiconductor Ecosystem".

The number of submitted papers has reached a historical high of 897, leading China.

The total number of papers submitted to VLSI Symposium 2024 is 897, the highest in history. A total of 232 articles were accepted, with an admission rate of 26%. The admission rate in previous years was around 34%, but this time the competition is very fierce due to the large number of submissions. Late News accepted 18 submissions after the normal deadline, of which two were accepted.

From the trend of publishing articles, it can be seen that 2024 has the most outstanding performance (left side of the figure below). Mototsugu Hamada, Chair of the VLSI Symposium, said, "The seminars alternate between Kyoto and Hawaii, and in Hawaii, the number of submitted works tends to be slightly higher. Last time, we felt that despite being held in Kyoto, the number of submitted papers increased by about 40%. From various regions, there has been an increase in submissions from Asia, especially from China.

China has also made a leap in the number of applications. The number of registrations in Japan has decreased compared to the competition held in Kyoto in 2023, and is roughly the same as the competition held in Hawaii in 2022 (see the figure on the right below). Out of 42 papers in Japan, 16 were accepted, with an acceptance rate of 38%. Mr. Hamada stated, "Although the number of papers submitted by Japan is not large, they maintain a certain level of quality, and the acceptance rate is higher than the overall average

In terms of device technology, there are many papers on 3D DRAM and 3D NAND.

The seminar on ultra large scale integrated circuit technology received a total of 355 papers on device technology, an increase of 30% compared to the previous session, of which 94 papers were accepted, accounting for 26%. About 60% of the accepted papers (i.e. 57 papers) are from Asia. Late News received 11 submissions, one of which has been accepted.

Divided by region, the number of articles from China and South Korea has increased in the past few years. China has the highest number of submissions, but South Korea has the highest number of acceptances. It is worth mentioning that among the papers accepted in South Korea, it is worth noting the paper from Samsung Electronics (hereinafter referred to as Samsung).

Throughout every field, many submitted and accepted papers are about memory/process/device principles and reliability. In the field of memory, there are many speeches about 3D DRAM and 3D NAND flash memory.

The submitted organizations include universities (250 submissions) and industry (105 submissions). Starting from 2022, the number of speeches has increased, especially those from Chinese universities. By organization, Samsung has the highest number of applications, with 15, followed by Imec with 10.

In terms of circuit design, there are many articles in the field of processors, including AI.

The VLSI Circuit Symposium received a total of 542 circuit design papers, an increase of over 50% compared to the previous year, of which 138 papers were accepted, accounting for 25%. Late News received seven submissions, one of which has been accepted. Like technical seminars, there has been a significant increase in submissions from China and other Asian countries. Although the number of projects adopted in Asia far exceeds that in Europe and America, the number of articles adopted in Japan has decreased from 16 last time to 7.

From a field perspective, the number of articles in almost all fields has increased. The processor field, including artificial intelligence technology, has the highest number of submissions at 151, but the acceptance rate is relatively low. On the other hand, the acceptance rate of sensors and biomedical fields is relatively high.

More than 80% of the submitting institutions are universities. Jobs from the industrial sector have been declining, but for the first time in a decade, they have fallen below 20%. Especially, almost all the papers submitted by China/Macau come from universities. In terms of the number of institutional applications, KAIST (Korean Academy of Science and Technology) submitted the highest number of articles, with 13, followed by Intel and Samsung, with a total of 8. The only university in Japan with three or more accepted papers is Tokyo Institute of Technology (three papers).
